Who Are We?
Sarah, Daniel, Samuel, and Hannah Roberts have been arranging and performing harp ensemble music together for the past seven years. As a family they enjoy working together on each piece and sharing their music with others through recordings and performances. Their family’s desire is to use music as a tool to minister to others and to point the way to Christ. But it all started a long, long time ago...
How we got started
It all began with Sarah many years ago when she heard a friend playing the harp and loved what she heard. Shortly afterwards, she began harp lessons, and as time passed the rest of us followed suit. At first we were just a family of harpists with no "ensemble" attached to our name. (Any musician will tell you that getting a beginner to play the right notes at the right time by himself is a challenge in itself.) Later as we got older, and a little more experienced, we started to tackle the task of playing duets, and other ensemble harp music.
This was a little disharmonious at times! We first started by playing music arranged by other harpists, but as more members joined the ensemble, music for four harps became somewhat scarce. As a result we decided to try our hand at arranging music, another experiment that blew up more than once. In 2002, we played our first public performance- a few songs at a church Christmas concert. This experience encouraged us to keep going, and since that time we have been blessed to be able to minister the love of Jesus to many through our music.
In 2004, we recorded our first album from home and sent it out as a gift to many of our friends and family members. From this first simple recording we received a tremendous response of how the Lord used the music to refresh many. This was really the opening of a doorway which led to the production of our first professionally recorded alblum, "Once in Royal David's City.", a collection of Christmas songs. Following this, we decided to get to work again and recorded our second and newest alblum, “Simply His”.
Why the harp?
Some have asked us: "Why didn't you choose to play the flute?" That's a GOOD question! It definitely would have been easier traveling with four flutes. Indeed, even a double bass would have saved our backs a LITTLE effort. However, we believe that the harp is a great instrument. Throughout the years, as we have played, we have seen many special things take place. As Christians, we have seen the hand of God at work touching and healing many people's hearts. For us, playing the harp is a ministry rather than an occupation. It is obvious to us that any talents that we may have are definitely not of our own working or efforts, they are simply gifts from the Lord. As such, it is our responsibility to use them to the fullest for His glory. Indeed, our playing is merely an extension of our love for the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Roberts Family:
Dad & Mom- Our parents play an invaluable part in our music and therefore deserve first mention. Although they don't play the harp, their other contributions certainly make up for this difference. Besides their busy job as parents, they fill the positions of Executive Producer, manager, driver, and cook, just to name a few. We are definitely indebted to Dad and Mom for taking seriously the Biblical command to train up their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. We are also very grateful for the many years they spent homeschooling us. Thanks Dad and Mom!
Sarah – 24- Sarah, as the firstborn, has led the in way in the development of the harp ensemble. Her creative ideas, musical experience, and persevering spirit have been vital to our efforts. Her cheerfulness lifts us up and motivates us to keep on going. She loves to play the harp, cook, and enjoy the outdoors.
Daniel – 21- Some people have so many abilities that it is nearly impossible to list them all, and Daniel is one of these people. A few of his talents include harp repair and service, computer and website maintenance, and critical listener, especially in the arranging of our harp quartets. But his most amazing trait is his ability to concentrate on what he is doing. He will tune out everything that is happening around him and will not stop until he thoroughly understands what he was working on. He also loves to read and to grow squash!
Samuel – 17- Samuel is an incredible blessing to our family and a vital member of the harp ensemble. He has been invaluable in handling all the technical details involved in the production of the CD's and always adds a flair to our arrangements. He often views the harp as a large banjo! Samuel also enjoys video recording and production and is involved in lawn mowing and landscaping.
Hannah – 13- As the youngest member of the family, Hannah has a special place in all of our hearts. Her enthusiasm for life and ability to get along with even the most challenging personality types completes our family in a beautiful way. Hannah is a great musician, loves to read, and spends as much time as she can outside in the yard.
